Marilyn Monroe’s Statue in Palm Springs Set for Removal Following Resident Complaints — Here’s Why

Marilyn Monroe’s “Forever Marilyn” statue was initially installed in Palm Springs, California, before being relocated to various other sites and eventually returning. However, local residents no longer want it in their neighborhood. Due to protests and opposition from the community, the statue will be moved to a more discreet location.

The 26-foot statue portrays the iconic scene from the 1955 film *The Seven Year Itch,* where Monroe’s character stands over a subway grate, her skirt blown up by the wind, revealing her legs and underwear. While the scene is famous, locals have criticized the statue’s massive recreation, considering it an inappropriate example for children in the area.

Palm Springs locals are outraged by the controversial monument, which they argue is not only sexist but also creates parking problems at the community’s Art Museum. Louis Grachos, the museum’s former executive director, echoed these concerns, stating that the statue is overly sexualized and inappropriate for a public space.

Elizabeth Armstrong, another former executive, emphasized the statue’s problematic nature, especially during a period of increased sexual violence and misogyny in the country. Other critics also pointed out that Marilyn Monroe’s legacy is more than just her sexual allure, yet that’s what the statue primarily emphasizes.

Protesters propose a new location
Although the current plan is to relocate “Forever Marilyn” to a more discreet spot within the same area, protesters like artist Nathan Coutts have suggested placing it among the concrete dinosaurs near Cabazon, where tourists can freely park, take photos, and enjoy the statue.

The 34,000-lb. artwork made of aluminum and stainless steel was created by Seward Johnson and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to make. It bore the brunt of offended people’s reactions ever since its inception but has also won the hearts of many fans including Monroe impersonator Suzie Kennedy.
